Obtaining Obsidian

In order to create a nether portal in Minecraft you will need at least 10 Obsidian blocks in your inventory. If you don’t have Obsidian, then click here for instructions on how to obtain some. To clarify, 10 blocks is the minimum number you can use to build the doorway. In addition to the Obsidian you will also need to make use of other blocks such as Granite. As soon you have them, you will then need to decide on a spot to build.

Building the Doorframe

Once you have decided on the perfect place to build your inter dimensional portal, you can proceed with the construction. The next step will show you how to create a nether portal in Minecraft.

Firstly, you will need to build a rectangular door frame with your Obsidian blocks. The doorframe should be 4 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall. However each corner block does not have to be Obsidian, which is why only 10 Obsidian blocks are needed.

Finally, after the blood, sweat and tears it took to build the doorframe, there is one last step needed to make the portal a fully functional nether portal and for this or you need is a torch. The last step is to set the middle of the frame on fire and the purple portal will appear between the blocks.
